This is quite simply The BOOK that changed my approach to composition. The book that brought me up a whole new level as an artist able to understand composition. A definite reference and forever book for any artist looking to acquire more knowledge and take the right steps in getting there. The one element I particularly enjoy is the layout: carefully thought through and user-friendly. This adds heaps to the enjoyment of learning something that can be down right boring. Roberts keeps all the elements he wants us to discover flowing smoothly and effortlessly on well written, illustrated and printed pages.
This edition also comes with a cd. A wee bonus to help highlight and explain the content of the manuscript by visually illustrating the essentials explained in the hardback. Since reading Ian Robert's book, I find myself frequently referring back to it, finding inspiration and new answers. Just in the same keen way Katherine Tyrell recommended this read on her blog, I am adding my own support and enthusiasm. Highly recommended.

The book covers the common armatures which are the basic structure behind every composition. There are also lessons on cropping and framing using values and colour shape. The lessons are illustrated by lots of examples, mostly painted by himself. They are mostly landscapes, still life, and a tiny bit on portrait.
The painting demonstrations included are very detailed, down to the type of colours used. The accompanying DVD shows examples of the techniques that are used to improve composition, before and after the changes were made. You can see how even little color changes can affect composition. These are also lessons in the book which are presented in the video. Highly recommended to all artists.
I studied art in a special program at the high school level, and studied Independent Illustration at the college level. I still felt that there were things I could learn to improve my composition and painting though, and I thought this book sounded promising.
I am happy to say that I learned a lot from this book. It examines how to structure your paintings properly by planning, starting with an armature, figuring out the movement and how you want to guide the viewer's eye through the painting, and taking control of the direction of the painting from the very beginning.
You start with your composition and structure figured out already, and then begin painting the big masses, and build your painting step by step, always making sure that you are not straying from your composition. Only at the end do you worry about details, which is something I have always wanted to get into too soon. It looks at color as well, and making sure that your colors are balanced properly, and working with the composition. The book also comes with a DVD, which is about 40 minutes long, and divided into two parts.
